Roadside 1, painting by John Boyle

Roadside 1 |  Acrylic/Canvas  |  ??? x ??? cm  | 1999

Sketchbook Notes by John Boyle

These paintings follow observations of landscape but the concerns and processes of painting are more important than external reference. They are about gesture, area, edge; about flatness and illusion and about obtaining a visual balance through contrast.
The paintings test these elements of painting, expressed in equally basic features of landscape  —  field, road, horizon, sky.
